ISO 50001:2018

Reduce energy costs and achieve a competitive advantage

For organizations committed to addressing their impact, conserving resources and improving the bottom line through efficient energy management, ISO has developed ISO 50001.

ISO 50001 is designed to support organizations in all sectors, this ISO standard provides a practical way to improve energy use, through the development of an energy management system (EnMS).

ISO 50001 – increase energy performance with the international standard for energy management systems

The international ISO 50001 standard established the requirements and guidance for organizations to successfully develop, implement, maintain and continually improve an energy management system (EnMS).

With the ISO 50001, the standard provides companies internationally recognized guidelines to improve energy balance, reduce CO2 emissions, and lower energy costs by using energy more efficiently.

ISO 50001 Energy Management Systems – Requirements with Guidance for Use, helps organisations introduce, operate and continually optimise a comprehensive energy management system (EnMS). The successful implementation of this systematic approach can optimise energy use by improving energy performance, reducing energy consumption and/or increasing energy efficiency.
First released in 2011, ISO 50001 has gained wide global acceptance amongst companies wishing to raise awareness of resource efficiency. On 21 August 2018 a revised edition of ISO 50001 was published by the ISO (International Organization for Standardization). On 23 November 2018 the German version of the revised standard DIN EN ISO 50001:2018 was published by DIN. Organisations which currently hold ISO 50001:2011 certification must re-certify on 20 August 2021 at the latest, to meet the requirements of this updated standard. From 21
February 2020 onwards, audits may only be carried out according to ISO 50001:2018, as per the IAF-resolution 2017-14 (International Accreditation Forum).
